To keep in mind

First surrealist, in the 1930s, Raoul UBAC, born in Wallonia, had an unconventional path as a painter. After an initial foray into painting, he turned to photography, while also being one of the main figures in the surrealist movement throughout the pre-war period. Between burning, collaging, and superimposing, he explored various photographic techniques before returning to painting in the mid-1940s, driven by the desire to express what he had started to read on slates that he tirelessly engraved. From furrows to traces, from rediscoveries to innovations, he found his own path, an abstract path that made him one of the leaders of the New School of Paris in the 1950s and 1960s.
