Romanticism appeared in Germany and England at the end of the 18th century and spread across the West until 1850 (with the emergence of Realism which closed the cycle of Romanticism).
After the discovery of the ruins of Pompeii, classicism was brought back into the light and is now called neoclassicism. This search for structured beauty will tend towards a search for the ideal, the dream of perfect beauty, which in turn will give rise to Romanticism.
It will be expressed in various forms of art, notably in painting through painters like the German Caspar David Friedrich, the French Ingres, and the English Turner or Constable.
