The Artists of the School of Paris
Generic term referring to a group of foreign painters (mainly from Central Europe) who arrived in Paris in the early 20th century and settled in the Montparnasse district.
A formidable friendly network, this School of Paris witnessed the evolution of a significant group of Jewish painters within it, actively participating in the libertarian blossoming that marked those years. While it is indeed a pictorial group, these individuals were also deeply involved in intellectual, social, and political life.
From Chagall to Modigliani in the early period, to the Russians Poliakoff or Lanskoy between the wars, and to those (French and foreign) united in the fight against Nazism during World War II, Montparnasse hosted committed men...
