It is after a serious depression that Niki de Saint-Phalle starts to paint, in the psychiatric hospital. Art Brut is her first mode of expression and her painting is compared, at the beginning, to the work of Jean Dubuffet.

Jean Tinguely (her second spouse) and the New Realists with whom she shared Happenings and exhibitions (Ben, Restany, Klein or Christo).
