Strong and sharp line, power and despair... The School of Paris in the sparkle of its glory! Bernard Buffet, coming out of the war, led painting to the shores of Sartre's existentialism, depicting the despair of a generation broken by the immobility of a nation too fearful for its dreams of revolution... But Buffet transformed his doubts into a pictorial singularity that crossed the borders of our country to impose French art (at the same time as the New Wave of cinema) everywhere in the world...
Born in Paris in 1928, Bernard BUFFET quickly rose to prominence on the national and international stage, as it was during his twentieth year that he received the Critics' Prize.
The power of his painting, which revolutionized figurative art, is part of the movement of "French New Realism". His sharp and nervous stroke gives him the freedom to address varied themes, often inspired by Western culture, such as Christ, Venice, New York, bullfighting, or the French Revolution.
During his prolific career, he also illustrated numerous works, such as Les Chants de Maldoror by Lautréamont or La Voix Humaine by Jean Cocteau, and created sets, notably for ballets choreographed by Roland Petit or Serge Lifar.
In this respect, Bernard BUFFET firmly establishes himself as an artist of his time, fully participating in the artistic expression of his era. He passed away on October 4, 1999, leaving behind a dense legacy composed of more than 8,000 works.
