Fully belonging to the Impressionist group (whom he met at the Fine Arts school), he will remain linked with them throughout his life, as he will be with Caillebotte, their friend and patron, and Durand-Ruel, their appointed dealer.

To keep in mind

Contrary to Claude Monet, he returned, after a fully Impressionist period, to a more classic painting style, in the line of Ingres, before combining the two influences and thus reaching his maturity as a painter.
